Overview
To get away from the crowds and see sights only seen by a few, check out taking a guided ATV or 4X4 off road excursion. For those who have some experience, try renting an ATV to explore on your own.
Due to the very nature of the activity, ATV and/or touring off road is best enjoyed during the warmer months of the year. Snowmobile rentals are available in the winter.
Where to go on your ATV or 4X4?
As of May 1, 2009, new rules are in effect governing the use of off-highway motor vehicles such as dirt bikes and ATVs in the area around Jackson Hole, specifically in the north Bridger-Teton National Forest. These new rules will limit travel to 392 miles of roads and 88 miles of trails.
It is the responsibility of the motorized vehicle user to know where they can ride. A rider should not rely on signs to determine if they are on the right trail. The use of a guide or a map (and being able to read it) will help riders stay out of trouble.
The trails on the Gros Ventre will be closed, but the trails on Shadow Mountain are going to be modified and enhanced making the Shadow Mountain Loop road a great place for families and individuals with moderate skills to ride.
There will be a new trailhead on Munger Mountain and there will be a new connector trail from Togwotee Mountain Lodge to trails and roads on the south side of the highway.
Maps are available from the Bridger-Teton National Forest offices. The maps not only outline where motorized vehicle use is allowed, but also show seasonal restrictions and vehicle-type restrictions.
Rentals & Fees
In summertime there are several businesses that rent all types of ATVs. In the winter, snowmobiles can be rented.
Rental fees can range from $100 per day to $500 per day, dependent on the type of off road vehicle that you are renting. Safety equipment may be included in the rental price or it may be an additional fee.
