Public Camping Areas

There are a few private campgrounds in town that have full hookups for RVs and are close to every amenity you can think of including a small store and laundry mat. While these give the visitor easy access to the town of Jackson, stores, and restaurants, they can't beat the majestic views, starry nights, and sounds of nature that you can experience in any number of government regulated sites in the national parks or forests. Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks have options for RVs with over 300 hook ups in Yellowstone and over 100 in the Grand Tetons. Reservations are not accepted at most sites in the Parks so make sure to arrive early to your preferred site as they are first come, first serve. In wilderness areas you can camp pretty much anywhere except where designated otherwise and make sure to check on regulations for length of stay and fire restrictions. Most camping in wilderness areas is very primitive so make sure to bring whatever you may need.

Grand Teton National Park has both government operated and privately owned campgrounds depending on where you want to stay. The privately owned campgrounds do take reservations and have RV hook-ups. The five government operated campgrounds in the park allow RVs but have no hook ups and can be booked on a first come first serve basis. Reservations can be made at some of the public campgrounds for group sites and there is a 14-day limit everywhere except for Jenny Lake which has a 7-day maximum stay. Rates are $17 per night for all public tent sites except Jenny Lake which is $19 per night. Campgrounds are open May to the end of September.

Bridger-Teton National Forest is one of the largest forests in the U.S. spanning about 135 miles from the southern border of Yellowstone National Park. There are about 45 campgrounds, with no RV hook ups, within the forest and fees range from $12 to $15 for a basic site. There is typically a ten day limit on length of stay in the Jackson District and sites are open from late May through September. Note that in the busy season the length of stay in some campgrounds may be limited to fewer days.

The Targhee National Forest runs along the west side of Grand Teton National Park in Idaho and from Yellowstone to Palisades Reservoir on the Wyoming side. There is a 14 day limit on length of stay and the three campgrounds in Wyoming can accommodate RV but do not have hook ups and charge from $5 to $10. The campgrounds are open June to September.

The Gros Ventre Wilderness Area sits to the east of Jackson and spans the length of the Gros Ventre mountain range. Camping in this area is primitive but you can drive up to most sites along Flat Creek, Curtis Canyon and Cache Creek. The views of the Tetons from this side of the valley are unbeatable.

In Yellowstone National Park you can experience wildlife and hydrothermal features that make it famous by camping in one of 2189 private and public camping units. Sites usually have a fee ranging from around $12 to $18.50 and up to $35 with an RV. Some sites are open year round but most are open from late spring to fall.

Camping opportunities are abundant all over western Wyoming and eastern Idaho. Contact the BLM, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Park Service-Inter-Mountain Regional Headquarters for more information on camping locations and restrictions.
