Overview
Mule deer are named for their large ears that look much like those of a mule. You can recognize them, as well, by the patch of white on their rump and their little white tail with black tip.

Large male mule deer can weigh as much as 250 pounds or more.
Mule deer have a unique way of running, leaping and landing on all four feet at one time.
Mule deer bucks have the largest set of antlers when they’re around six years old.

Best Place for Viewing Mule Deer
Although mule deer can be found spread throughout the Jackson Hole area of Wyoming, here are some key places to find them:
- Yellowstone National Park
Mule deer are not seen often in Yellowstone, but still can be found along the Madison River. You’ll also see a scattering in the Mammoth Hot Springs area. You’ll also view them between the Mammoth area and Tower Junction. - Grand Teton National Park
Mule deer are found (and many other wildlife) throughout the park along the Teton Range.
Respecting Wildlife
Take care when driving in deer country:
- Watch for mule deer along the road at night.
- Keep your eye on the sides of the road and be alert for animals trying to cross.
- Slow down during dawn and dusk as this is when wildlife is most active.
- When you see one deer along the road, expect others, since they travel in groups.
