Gannet Peak, Highest in Wyoming
Gannet Peak is the highest mountain in Wyoming, rising to over thirteen thousand feet. It is situated in the Wind River Mountain Range, along the Continental Divide, just twenty-five miles north of the town of Pinedale. In fact, it is a haven for mountaineers, hikers and climbers throughout the year.
Wyoming's highest mountain is Gannet Peak. It stands at a height of thirteen thousand, eight hundred and four feet, sitting amidst the Continental Divide and is part of the many mountains found in the Wind River Mountain Range.
Gannet Peak is home to some of the biggest of the Rocky Mountain's glaciers. Its slopes offer challenging adventures for mountaineers as it is so remote. In fact, it is only suitable for expert climbers that are prepared for full day hikes, snowy conditions and changing weather. However, the only base camps are below the three thousand foot mark as the five glaciers are still actively moving, making the hike there and back a distance of about forty miles with a nine thousand foot climb vertically.
The mountain can be accessed via the Elkhart Park and Ink Wells/Glacier trails from Pinedale and Dubois. In fact, mountaineering guides are highly recommended.
One of the main issues with Gannet Peak is the weather. Though summer temperatures are dry and warm, end of the day type thunderstorms can erupt without warning. Sub-zero temperatures are common even on summer nights, and strong winds and sudden snowstorms are common throughout the year.
