Pinedale, Wyoming
 |
Pinedale, Wyoming, 77 miles south of Jackson, is a jumping-off spot for hikers, climbers, campers, anglers, hunters, and day-trippers who enjoy the national forest and BLM lands surrounding the community. These range from the rugged and remote hiking trails of the Wind River Mountains to such easily accessible spots as Fremont Lake.
Located just four miles north of town, Fremont Lake is 10 miles long, a mile wide, and 600 feet deep. Its pure waters support mammoth lake trout, and the surrounding peaks provide a spectacular setting for those visitors intent on simply enjoying the view.
Pinedale if you'll pardon the cliché is not just another pretty place, however. The town is also the center of an area rich in history. One of the highlights of summer in Pinedale celebrates this fact. The annual Green River Rendezvous Pageant recalls the fur trade era. This year the pageant is set for July 7-9.
Attracting modern-day mountain men and women from throughout the United States, the pageant is an exciting and colorful re-creation of the fur trade rendezvous of the last century, when the fur trappers would meet the supply wagons from back east to trade the fruits of a year's worth of work in the wilderness.
Pinedale's celebration is rooted in history. Just a few miles from town, on the Green River, lies the actual site of many of the original rendezvous.
Not surprisingly, the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale has an extensive collection of fur-trade artifacts. But this 15,000-square-foot facility also houses exhibits detailing the Plains Indians history and the history of the early settlement of Wyoming. The museum's summer hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, June 1-September 1.
The Sublette County Fair is set for August at the fairgrounds in Big Piney.
