Overview
Big game hunting is a sport you can enjoy even if you don’t have previous experience. Once you have the proper equipment, know how to use it and know the basic safety rules, a sharp eye is all that’s needed. Early September marks the earliest season for big game hunting so you should get out there and give it a try.
Where to go for big game hunting
The mountains of northwestern Wyoming, southwest Montana, and eastern Idaho provide the ideal habitat for a large diversity of big game animals. Grasslands and brushy areas in lower elevations and agricultural areas provide habitat for herds of whitetail, mule deer and pronghorn antelope. Elk inhabit both forestlands and open grassland at a variety of elevations. Moose frequent marshy areas and thick growth riparian undergrowth. Bighorn sheep and mountain goats are typically found above timberline deep in wilderness areas.
