If you have some time to kill in Idaho Falls or if the city is your destination it has quite a few attractions to offer. Located in the upper Snake River Valley, Idaho Falls has a population of about 50,000. It is surrounded by farming fields which help make it the nation's potato production center. Make sure to try some famous Idaho spuds during your stay. The city is named after a low human-made dam that spans 1500 feet across the Snake River right in the heart of downtown. There is a 2 mile greenway along the shore that you can stroll along, bring a picnic lunch, or sit and observe wildlife such as trumpeter swans and brown pelicans that like to frequent the area. Near the falls, historic downtown has many small shops and restaurants.
The Bonneville Museum is located downtown and open Monday through Friday and Saturday afternoons. It has a wide variety of exhibits from art to natural history to Native American history to nuclear energy. Further south of town the Tautphaus Park is a fun place to visit on a clear day with the family. It is free to the public, open daily, and its zoo, preserve, tennis courts, ice skating rink, and picnic tables have much to offer to any visitor.
Another site to check out if you have time are Hell's Half Acre Lava flows. The name comes from explorers who said the flows reminded them of hell. If you dont have time to visit Craters of the Moon, which sits 90 miles west of the city, Hell's Lava flows are worth taking a look at, especially the featured 5,350 foot vent. There are interpretive signs throughout the park that explain the formation of features like caves, fissures, and rock flows.
You won't have trouble finding places to eat and stay in Idaho Falls. The city has more to offer than meets the eye so explore, explore.
