Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area in Wyoming

Jedediah Smith Wilderness

The Jedediah Smith Wilderness is a fairly new and protected area in Wyoming. It sits along the Wyoming-Idaho border on the western side of the Teton Mountain Range, stretching all the way to Yellowstone National Park. In fact, it is very undeveloped and recreation is very limited as no roads go through the wilderness and no buildings have been constructed. It is as wild as any wilderness can get, only suited for those hardened visitors that have backcountry experience.

The backcountry could not get wilder than the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. Located in Wyoming, it was only designated in 1984 and covers over one hundred and twenty-three thousand acres of unique scenery, caves and limestone rock features. Running along the western slopes of the Teton Mountain Range to Yellowstone National Park, it is far from roads and human habitation or influences.

This narrow and long wilderness is popular during the warm summers with hikers, backpackers, backcountry campers, fishermen and hunters, but the majority of visitors do not venture far within the wilderness' borders or far from the passing highway. Jedediah Smith is also heavily snow-covered in the colder months, erasing all trace of its more than one hundred and seventy-five miles of challenging trails. Its scenic lakes are not to be missed, including Hidden, Camp, Spearhead Peak, Moose and Alaska Basin lakes. However, most of the lakes are off bounds to campers to protect what is left of Wyoming's lush and vast wilderness areas.
