Maestro Mark Wigglesworth and pianist Stephen Hough are esteemed members of our Festival family, and we are thrilled to bring them back to perform together again. As Music Director Donald Runnicles explains, "Our orchestra has very high opinions of Mark and Stephen. Through their various appearances, they have built a relationship with the orchestra and with our public. That is exactly what we seek in bringing artists back on a regular basis, each concert fueling further that bond with the players and accordingly, the music." This weekend's program opens with the fairytale suite of Ravel's Ma Mère l'Oye and quickly transitions into the power of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3. "Rach 3," as it is referred to colloquially, is a beautiful feature for Stephen Hough. It is one of the most challenging and technically demanding pieces in classical piano repertoire and it will resonate with Stephen's virtuosity. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is a showcase for our orchestra as they take our audience through an epic journey that presents visual motifs in an inventive and distinctive aural form.
