The beautiful bronze statue of featuring two elk and a grizzly bear is the first thing you will see as you approach the Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center located at 532 North Cache Street in Jackson. Cache turns into Highway 89 and Grand Teton National Park is just a few miles up the road. The next thing that will catch your eye is the unique architecture of the building and specifically the native grasses growing on the roof of the center. The building seems to blend perfectly with the back drop of the National Elk Refuge and Gros Ventre mountain range spanning the horizon.
The Visitor Center, which is open all year long, was created to provide people with accurate information and convenient amenities and is staffed with friendly and knowledgeable Jackson Hole residents. One convenient stop at the Center provides the following:
- Wildlife displays and a movie theatre where a wide variety of natural history and wildlife films play every day. There are also a wide variety of interpretive programs geared to people of all ages.
- Several outdoor wetland viewing decks which are complete with binoculars and spotting scopes to view the expansiveness of the National Elk Refuge. Look for coyote, sandhill crane, trumpeter swan and elk. Flat Creek runs through the Refuge and provides habitat for many types of water fowl. The grasses gently swaying in the breeze, the decks make a perfect sightseeing point, and are also a great vantage point for artists.
- An impressive bookstore houses an array of guide books useful in your travels as well as children’s books and other selections.
- A gift shop filled with gifts and clothing specific to the area.
