Learning to Flyfish
You saw the movie "A River Runs Through It" or maybe just saw someone out there and envied the graceful cast. You thought to yourself, "its beautiful, but how can I ever learn?" Well, its far easier than most think. There is no doubt that fly fishing has taken the imagination of many anglers and of others who have never fished. Not only is there a lot of enjoyment in executing a nice cast, but its a type of fishing in which you can learn as much as you want, or maybe just a little and have a good time. Some get into it deeply, learning names of all the insects and tying their own flies, while others are content with simply casting a fly out and seeing a fish rise and take the offering just as if it were the same as the dozens of real ones he has just taken.
For many years fly fishing was primarily fishing with dry flies to trout. However, changes in both equipment and society have broadened the scope of fly fishing until it is now practiced in virtually all types of water for all types of fish.
Learning to flyfish can be both easy and fun. The easiest and best way is to get professional instruction. We schedule two hour classes regularly throughout the summer for a reasonable fee. In two hours youll generally learn the basic casts and knots you need to get started. After that the best thing to do is to get out there and try it. If it falls within your budget, a guided trip is great after a casting class. In an all day guided trip youll put the basics to use in practical application, learning how to catch fish and read the water. If this doesnt fall within your budget, I suggest you buy or rent some equipment and get out there and try it. Drop into our pro tackle shop and talk to one of our fly fishing specialists, they can point you to a good stream to hone your skills and set you up with either a rental rod or help you purchase the right equipment for you.
Fly Casting Instruction
If youve never learned to cast or if you need help improving your cast, come to our shop for some fly casting instruction. We have several expert instructors who will help you learn the art of fly casting. At the end of each class, you can even try to catch some trout at our trout-filled casting pond (there are a few lunkers in there). This service is available through our shop on an hourly basis and each instructor can handle up to four people per class. Loaner fly rods are included in the price. This allows you the chance to try some really excellent equipment.
