MAY 2003 -- Color Matters
II had planned to write about the evils of a proposed golf course and trophy home development known as the Canyon Club. Currently under consideration, the project would reside along the banks of the Snake River in Jackson Hole. But I have been personally and professionally embroiled in this controversy for so long that, today anyways, Im unable to muster the will to continue the fight. Im emotionally drained.

APR 2003 -- The Agony Of Advocacy
II had planned to write about the evils of a proposed golf course and trophy home development known as the Canyon Club. Currently under consideration, the project would reside along the banks of the Snake River in Jackson Hole. But I have been personally and professionally embroiled in this controversy for so long that, today anyways, Im unable to muster the will to continue the fight. Im emotionally drained.

JUN 2002 -- Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole: Techniques and Tactics Part 2
In Techniques & Tactics: Part 1 we discussed the environmental factors which influence and help dictate the techniques you'll want to try when fishing in and around Jackson Hole. This month we'll get specific and cover techniques for dry fly, nymph and streamer fishing.

JUN 2002 -- Fly Fishing in Jackson Hole: Techniques and Tactics Part 1
The first half of our discussion will concentrate on the environmental factors that influence and help dictate which techniques and tactics you'll want to utilize while fly fishing in Jackson Hole. It sets the stage for next months column which will focus on specific techniques and strategies I've found useful over the years.

JUN 2001 -- The Summer of 96 Jinx
They say when it rains it pours. If it happens to be pouring on you, you may well think youre jinxed. And thats exactly how I felt for a two-month span during the summer of 1996. Though the preceding eight years of guiding operations had gone comparatively well, a bad moon was rising and all hell was about to break loose. It all began on the Green River.

JUN 2000 -- Cutthroat Country
In a day and age when it increasingly difficult to find a native trout, much less a native indigenous trout, it is comforting to know that there is a strong population of the Fine-spotted Snake River Cutthroat Trout, a unique subspecies of cutthroat, residing right here in Jackson Hole. Cutthroats originally ranged throughout the Intermountain West and are, in fact, the only species of trout native to the area.

MAR 2000 -- To Net or Not to Net
A common question at High Country Flies is whether it is better to net a trout or not. The short answer is...it depends. The long answer is that you shouldn't net a trout unless you have to. Having said that, there are times when it is appropriate to use a net.

JUN 99 -- Fishing With Barbless Hooks
I've always been an advocate of fly fishing with a barbless hook. While msome fly patterns (like the Stimulators tied by Umpqua Feather Merchants) are tied on barbless hooks to begin with, they are in the vast minority.

FEB 99 -- Keeping Score
I've done it, you've done it, we've all done it at one time or another. Kept score that is. Counted the number of fish we've caught in a given day, or on a given trip, or in a given season.

OCT 98 -- Fall is the Time for Streamers
While dry fly fishing clearly ranks as the number one preferred fly fishing technique amongst anglers, I personally will happily chuck big streamers if the larger trout aren't rising on a given day.

AUG 98 -- Top Ten Excuses
Guy has been really busy guiding this summer, so he came up with this....

JUL 98 -- The Politically Active Angler
With the ever increasing popularity of fly fishing comes an inevitable dilemma...our trout streams and lakes are becoming more and more crowded as anglers flock to a seemingly dwindling supply of quality fisheries.

JUN 98 -- Overlooked and Misunderstood Tackle: Part 2
Continuing our discussion about the little things that make a big difference we turn to products ranging from sunglasses to fly boxes which taken individually, are perhaps not of great import. Collectively, however, they represent the classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

MAY 98 -- Overlooked and Misunderstood Tackle: Part 1
They say its the little things in life that can make it all worthwhile, and fly fishing is no different. A little attention to detail can make your gear and tackle work for you rather than against you.

APR 98 -- A Tale of Two Districts
It may be the best thing to happen to the Snake River since the piecemeal construction of the Army Corps of Engineers levee system began in the 1950s, or it may turn out to be a complete failure.

MAR 98 -- Zen in the Art of Fly Fishing
I know how to make virtually any beginning or intermediate fly fisher improve immediately. And without a single casting tip, such as keeping the wrist firm. Or without any hints on tactics, such as mending early in your drift.

FEB 98 -- Notes From a World Championship -- Part II
I dont know about you, but if I hear one more reporter, political analyst or media pundit use the catch phrase "rush to judgment," Im going to scream. But was I guilty of just that when it came to the World Fly Fishing Championships?

JAN 98 -- Notes From a World Championship -- Part I
As many of you know, last September Jackson Hole was host to the 1997 World Fly Fishing Championships. Billed as the "Olympics of fly fishing," the competition strives for the Olympic ideals of sportsmanship and fair play.

DEC 97 -- Snow & Trout
With the onset of winter upon us in Jackson Hole we complete another fishing season and mother nature gears up for it's annual snowpack buildup.

YD Flies - 20% Below Wholesale, Top Quality - 20% below wholesale everyday! These first quality hand-tied flies are the best deal on the 'web. It just so happened that a very well-known fly distributor bought too many that sat around unsold.
