Food - Vegetarian Survival Guide
Vegetarian Survival in Jackson Hole WY
This column is divided into three parts.
1) OVER $10 DINNER suggestions;
2) UNDER $10 DINNER suggestions;
3.) LUNCH suggestions.
Lacking vegetarian restaurants in Jackson Hole (except Harvest for lunch), our
strategy will be to give general descriptions of places that have the best
vegetarian selections and to note specific, "Recommended" dishes
that are above average in taste (based on staff reviews and suggestions from
local, die-hard vegetarians). For dinners, assume places serve at least beer
and wine unless we state "no alcohol."
The vast majority of vegetarians will eat some dairy, butter
and egg so dish recommendations may include those ingredients (we'll try to
note their presence and if they can be withheld upon request). The cautious
vegan eater should note that it is virtually impossible to guarantee a 100
percent vegetarian meal unless you either: a) are at a vegetarian restaurant
and the menu clearly states no animal products are in a particular dish; or b)
chat with the chef and, for good measure, read the label for every ingredient
(some apparently vegan products may not be, for example, soy cheese usually
contains milk proteins and pasta often contains egg). We'll do our best to
identify--and eliminate--dishes that contain those sneaky animal ingredients
like chicken and beef stock, lard and anchovy paste. Relying on information
from servers is risky; your best bet is to call beforehand (between 4 and 6pm
is probably the best time--not busy and the chef is in the kitchen).
Over $10 Dinners
Blue Lion
The Blue Lion is the only restaurant in town in this price
range that attempts to welcome vegetarians on their menu with a vegetarian
section. Unfortunately, there are only three dishes: Pasta Primavera, Tempeh
Monterey, and Tempeh Crepes. The food is generally very good and it's a
popular spot with locals. Recommendation: the Tempeh Crepes. 160 N. Millward,
about four blocks off the Town Square, 733-3912.
Off Broadway
The food is generally very good and it is a popular spot
with locals. They have two vegetarian pasta dishes and a stir fry: Ziti
Mediterranean (has chevre cheese which can be withheld); Pesto a la Matt (the
pesto has cheese which cannot be withheld); and Thai Stir Fry. Recommendation:
Thai Stir Fry. 30 South King, about one block off the Town Square, 733-9777.
Snake River Grill
A little more expensive than average but for that you get a
place that's a little more "trendy." There's a grilled Vegetable
Plate entree; a Farfalle with Artichoke Hearts pasta (ask to hold the
pepperoncini) appetizer--ask for a double order; a Fava and White Bean Salad
(ask to hold the pancetta); and wood-fired pizzas (less than $10). They make a
point to say they will work with people with "individual dietary
needs" so you will probably have better luck here "creating"
what you want. The food is generally very good and it's a popular spot with
locals. 84 East Broadway, on the Town Square (upstairs), 733-0557.
Under $10 Dinners
Betty Rock
This is your typical cafe hangout (typical in cities, that
is, but one of only two in Jackson open at night): simple yet progressive cafe
food, great baked goods, counter service, easy atmosphere, people reading. No
alcohol. Recommendation: pizza when they make it. 733-0747.
Chinatown
A typical Chinese restaurant with okay food and numerous
vegetarian options. Recommendation: Bean Curd with Chinese Vegetables,
Szechuan Bean Curd, and Mu Shu Vegetables (has egg). 850 West Broadway, about
a mile from the Town Square, 733-8856.
Jackson Hole Pub & Brewery
Not surprisingly, this place has a brew pub atmosphere
(excellent beer). They've got several vegetarian pastas: Spaghetti Puttanesca
(ask to hold the anchovy), Linguine Hellspont (contains feta), and Prima Vera.
Also, wood fired pizzas and calzones. A popular spot with locals. Open for
lunch too. 265 South Millward, about eight blocks off the Town Square,
739-2337.

This is a vegetarian restaurant (yeahhhh!), bakery and
natural food market open for breakfast and lunch (the market is open until 8
pm in the summer). For lunch you can choose: organic salad bar, garden burger,

chili, soup (usually dairy free), and smoothies. You can sub soy cheese for
the usual stuff. The food is generally very good and it's a popular spot with
locals. Counter service. Lunch 11 to 3pm. 130 West Broadway, two blocks off
the Town Square, 733-5418.

Pearl Street Bagel
A favorite with locals. You can get bagel sandwiches with
the usual veggie and cheese toppings plus hummus. Smoothies in the summer.
Counter service. Open 6:30am to 6pm. 145 West Pearl, several blocks from the
Town Square, 739-1218.
Rising Sage Cafe
The cafe at the National Museum of Wildlife Art giving it a
slight artistic, intellectual feel (and a great view). The food is generally
very good and it's a popular spot with locals: grilled Artichoke Heart Panini
(has mozzarella which can be withheld), Vegetarian Hummus Pita, Oriental Salad
(ask to hold the chicken), peanut butter and jelly, salads and usually a
vegetarian soup. An affiliate of Spring Creek-Aman Resorts. Counter service. A
couple of miles north of the Town Square towards the Park, 733-8649.
Shades Cafe
Soup, salads, sandwiches. Popular with locals.
Recommendation: Veggie Burrito. Counter service. Open 7:30am to 5pm (until 9pm
in July and August only). 82 South King, about one block off the Town Square,
733-2015.
