Located in beautiful Grand Teton National Park, Jenny and Jackson Lakes are two of the main bodies of water located within park boundaries. Jenny Lake, the most beloved of all Grand Teton lakes, is situated at the foot of Cascade Canyon and surrounded by an expansive forest overflowing with Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir and lodgepole pine. Named for Jenny Leigh, the Shoshone wife of Beaver Dick Leigh, the lake provides excellent views of the Cathedral Group comprised of Teewinot, Grand Teton and Mount Owen. This area offers a plethora of hiking trails and Hidden Falls which is located near Inspiration Point. In the summer, the boat dock on the east shore of Jenny Lake offers boat rides across the lake to the start of many exciting hiking trails. If you miss the boat for your return trip no need to panic, its only an easy 2.4-mile walk back to the Jenny Lake Visitor Center.

As the biggest lake in the park, Jackson Lake has a somewhat tainted history. In the winter of 1910-1911, the Jackson Lake Dam was constructed to supply water for Idaho potato and beet farmers. The 70-foot-tall dam increased the size of the natural lake and took with it 7,200-acres of trees. Completely rebuilt in 1988-1989, the dam remains yet another example of how Wyoming provides water for farmers in surrounding states. Boating, fishing, water skiing and kayaking are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed on the lake. From the north, the Snake River flows into the lake with Elk Island sitting near the center.

Fremont Lake, located near the town of Pinedale, is Wyomings second-largest natural lake stretching 11 miles across and reaching up to 600 feet in depth in some places. Only three miles outside of Pinedale, the lake is famous for Mackinaw that approach 40 pounds. Fremont Lake has three Forest Service campgrounds scattered along its shores. The area also has fishing boats, canoes, kayaks and pontoon boats for rental.

Located south of Jackson in the Lower Valley are the town of Alpine and the Palisades Reservoir. Built at the confluence of the Snake, Greys and Salt Rivers, the reservoir is great for fishing, water skiing, camping and picnicking.

East of Jackson, in a land filled with alpine lakes and small tributaries, is the Wind River Canyon. Just south of the town of Thermopolis, this section of Wyoming is hands down beautiful. Neighboring the Bighorn River, the Wind River Canyon is an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely float while fishing for rainbow trout. Fishing permits and rentals are available at local sporting goods shops.
