In 1932, the local Rotary Club planted trees in the center of Jackson and constructed four picturesque arches made from hundreds of elk antlers in the 1950s and 60s. Today, the trees offer summertime shade and the arches, which are probably in the photo albums of almost every visitor who comes to Jackson, mark the corners of the Town Square. During the winter, when the arches and trees are blanketed with snow and decorated with lights, the Square takes on a festive atmosphere. A focal point for tourist activity in Jackson, the Square, which is surrounded by dozens of boardwalk-fronted art and photo galleries, bars, restaurants, factory outlets and gift shops, is in a prime location for the shopping savvy.
During the summer in this Old West town, stagecoaches wait to transport you on a carefree carriage ride around town-with the opportunity to ride on top if the weather permits. Every evening, except Sunday, cowboys put on a free shoot-out for throngs of camera-happy tourists. The scene, which brings traffic to a halt, starts each summer night at 6:15 p.m. and has been a tradition since 1957. With dramatic players and antics, the mountain law system seems in dire need of reform. With exciting reenactments of disputing outlaws and justice officers, the sound of blanks is surprisingly loud and can be frightening for small kids.
As for the local shopping, one can expect to find everything from regional goods to a select few mainstream clothing companies. A number of choice art galleries and museums line the Square and offer great stopping points on a summer stroll through town. Whether you fancy tasty meals at fine dining establishments or are just catching the public transportation, the Town Square is an ideal starting place.
