You won't find anything quite as relaxing as being in the wilderness and soaking in a pool from natural hot springs. These hot thermal springs are surrounded by spectacular scenery that just adds to the pleasure. Western Wyoming shows you the best in refreshing enjoyment.
In Yellowstone, you can travel to the Upper Geyser Basin or the Lower Basin and the Midway to view the many hot springs and geysers within Yellowstone National Park. You'll find that some hot springs are designated for recreation – such as one part of the Firehole River in the Lower Basin. It's open for swimming in its warm water. A great soaking area is Boiling River, where a six-foot wide stream of hot water falls over rock. Close to Mammoth Hot Springs, you'll find Boiling River in the northern part of Yellowstone.
In case you ever wondered how these springs came to be: rain and snowmelt sink into the ground and get heated by magma, to erupt to the surface once again. Geysers and hot springs are usually found on flat-bottomed valleys, and between lava flows. The rock in the area is porous, which allows the water to flow easily to the surface and create the hot springs. Sometimes the weight of the cooler water above the heated water makes enough pressure to create a geyser, where the water comes bursting forth towards the sky.
There are many hot springs all around the area to visit. The Dunanda Falls Hot Springs is a hike of 8 ½ miles. Here there are several smaller pools below the huge Dunanda Falls with forests all around. It's a hike of 16 miles to the Ferris Fork Pool, where there are multiple rock pools to enjoy. Because these are more remote, you will likely find you have the pools all to yourself.
