Bend's Wildfire Brewery Forced To Change Name
Posted: August 21st, 2008
Wildfire Brewery, Bend's youngest beer-producing company, recently received notification that the business's name violates copyright laws and therefore must change its title or head to the courtroom. Wildfire restaurants - a chain of eateries with locations in Illinois, Minnesota, Virginia and Georgia - sent a letter earlier this month to the owners of Wildfire Brewery informing them that they were in violation of a trademarked title. The letter strongly suggested that the brewery changes its name within six months, said Paul Cook, a co-owner and brewer for Wildfire. Rather than take the issue to court, Cook said the Bend suds producer opted to change their business name. We're a young company so we decided to raise the white flag, Cook said.

The Marathon in Ashton, Idaho
Posted: August 21st, 2008
Marathons these days are mostly a big city affair, but not exclusively so: this weekend the town of Ashton, Idaho (pop: about 1100) will host the highly regarded Mesa Falls Marathon. (Ashton is north of Idaho Falls and south of West Yellowstone, a remote but gorgeous area that's well worth a visit if you ever have the chance.) Our friend and New West investor Brad Feld, who is on a quest to complete marathons in all 50 states, will be taking part, and he's raising money for the Accelerated Cure Project. Together with our partners at SunValleyOnline, we're pleased to make a small contribution of $200 towards Brad's goal of $2,000 for this race. Go Brad, and we wish everyone in Ashton a delightful time.

Obama to be in Billings Wednesday
Posted: August 21st, 2008
Senator Barack Obama will visit Billings, Montana next Wednesday en route to Denver for the Democratic National Convention, the Montana Democratic Party announced today. It will be the presidential hopeful's fifth visit to Montana -- a state with three electoral votes Obama is battling hard to win. The few polls conducted here indicate a slight advantage for Obama. (Bush won in 2004 with 59 percent of the vote.) No details of Obama's visit have been made available. We'll keep you posted.

Beyond the Photos, the Real Magic of Crow Fair
Posted: August 21st, 2008
This year during one of the daily parades at Crow Fair, the annual powwow and rodeo held along the Little Big Horn River on the Crow Reservation in southern Montana, one of my mothers-in-law yelled combatively at a professional photographer who planted himself between her and one of her grandchildren on parade. "Hey, get out of the way," she hollered. "We're taking pictures, too." The guy knelt down and kept shooting film.
